LoC breached, injured jawan succumbs

JAMMU: Pakistan troops yet again breached the truce by resorting to unprovoked firing on forward Indian posts along the Line of Control (LoC) in Poonch district today and attracted prompt retaliation from own troops.

Meanwhile, an Army jawan, who was injured in Pakistani shelling along the LoC in Rajouri district, succumbed to injuries at a military hospital here, a defence spokesman said today.

The Indian and Pakistan armies traded heavy fire across the Line of Control (LoC) in Poonch district on Saturday, defence officials said.

“The Pak troops resorted to unprovoked heavy firing on the LoC in Khawas of Poonch sector,” they said.

“Own troops retaliated promptly and gave befitting reply,” they said, adding, “the two sides traded heavy fire across the Line of Control (LoC) for some time.

"No report of any casualty or injury/damage on own side has been reported so far," they added.
Meanwhile, an Army Jawan injured in ceasefire violation along the Line of Control (LoC) in Sunderbani sector of Rajouri, has succumbed during a treatment at Military Hospital.

"Pakistan had resorted to unprovoked firing on Indian Army posts in Sunderbani sector on April 17 and during the exchange of fire, Havildar Charanjeet Singh sustained grievous bullet injuries,” defence spokesperson Jammu Lt Col Devindra Anand here said.

Col Anand said that the soldier was immediately rushed to Military hospitals and provided intensive medical care. “However, despite all efforts, the gallant soldier succumbed to his injuries in the early hours on Friday,” he added.

The spokesman said that Havildar Charanjeet Singh (42) belonged to village Kalsian- Nowshera of Rajouri District and is survived by wife Neelam Kumari.

“The nation will always remain indebted to him for the supreme sacrifice and devotion to duty", he said.

“The mortal remains have been brought to his native village wherein he will be bid farewell with full military honours,” he added.

Singh’s death raised the number of persons killed in over 650 ceasefire violations by Pakistan in the state this year to 31, including 16 security personnel.
