Protestors block NH at Vijaypur, demand legal action against docs

SAMBA : Tragic details emerging have revealed that poor financial condition of the family was the sole reason that the unfortunate 28-year-old woman opted to undergo tubectomy at Government Emergency Hospital Vijaypur, leading to her death, a day before.

Meanwhile, the government on Wednesday ordered a magisterial inquiry into the death of Seema Devi, caused allegedly by negligence of the doctors, even as locals today blocked National Highway at Vijaypur, seeking legal action against doctors performing surgeries.

The mother of three had yesterday chosen to undergo the surgery at a special family planning camp organised at government emergency hospital Vijaypur to avail the meager amount of Rs 1200 which is given by government to those women undergoing sterilization surgery, the relatives of the deceased women told The News Now.

“The family is so poor that they hardly managed squarely meal and it was to avail the amount of Rs 1200 from the government that she went to the family planning camp where she died due to the negligence of doctors,” they said.

Seema, a resident of Chak Ram Chand in Supwal area of Samba, was taken on March 20 to the hospital for sterilization surgery. “Soon after the surgery, she was shifted to a ward and her condition suddenly deteriorated,” Chief Medical Officer (CMO), Samba, Rajinder Sambyal said.

Seema was later shifted to the Government Medical College (GMC) in Jammu where she later died, he said.

Meanwhile, locals in the area today blocked National Highway at Vijaypur, seeking legal action against doctors who were performing surgeries.

Police said that two doctors namely Anshu Charak, consultant Gynecologist and Dr Vishal Mahajan posted at Accidental Hospital, Vijaypur were performing the surgeries when she started complaining of acute pain.
It was only when Additional Deputy Commissioner Samba Tilak Raj Sharma and CMO Rajinder Sambyal along with senior officers from district administration and police reached the spot and pacified the protesters that the agitated protestors agreed to consider a resolution.

The officers assured One Lakh rupees financial assistance to the family on behalf of district administration and Rs two lakh from the health department under family planning scheme, following which the protesters called off their protest and the highway was thrown open.

SDM Vijaypur Sanjeev Sharma when contacted informed The News Now that a team of the officers of police and administration visited the residence of the deceased and handed over Rs one lakh as contributory amount. He said that the family is too poor to bear her last rites.

Meanwhile, official sources said that the administration and police faced a tough time at the residence of the deceased as protestors sought written apology and presence of both the doctors, which was not conceded by Dr Charak.

Following the refusal from doctors’ side, the SDM in the evening ordered a magisterial inquiry into the incident.

"A probe has been ordered into the incident. The matter will be investigated by a five-member committee of doctors,” said SDM Vijaypur.

He added that the postmortem of the deceased was conducted by the board of doctors and further Rs 2 lakh amount will be handed over to the kin of the deceased as she died within ten days after sterilization surgery.

"Further action will be taken after the probe report comes to us and stern action will be taken," the officer said.

Seema, is survived by her 10-year-old daughter Anjali, 7-year-old Nanhi and 3-year-old son Lakshay.
