New Delhi, Mar 16 : The Centre on Friday told the Supreme Court that a thorough investigation was going on into the alleged PNB (Punjab National Bank) scam and in this regard, many people have also been arrested.
The apex court three-judge bench, headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Dipak Misra and also comprising Justice AM Khanwilkar and Justice DY Chandrachud, was hearing two petitions filed by lawyer duo -- Manohar Lal Sharma and Vineet Dhanda -- seeking a Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe into the PNB scam.
The central government on Friday, during the course of the hearing in the PNB scam plea case, strongly opposed the Supreme Court's suggestion to file a sealed cover status report before it in the case.
The Centre opposed the apex court's suggestions and submitted that this would amount to parallel enquiry "if we agree to the SC's suggestions that it need to file a sealed cover status report before it in the case".
The central government said, there's no justification to ask the investigating agencies to inform the apex court at this stage about the status of probe.
The apex court said, "we would hear the matter again on April 9, Monday"
The PIL, filed by Sharma, sought extradition of Nirav Modi within two months.
The Attorney General (AG), top law officer representing the central government, had told the apex court that the PIL was not maintainable and should be dismissed.
The other petitioner, Vineet Dhanda, had told the apex court three-judge bench that the whole country was watching and that the SC must at least issue notice to the Centre as the government did nothing in the past in a similar case relating to Vijay Mallya.
