Kolkata, Mar 16 : After continued successful implementation of the Safe Drive Save Life programme, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has come up with another brilliant idea – Slow Drive Save Life.

The first has ensured a 10 per cent reduction in accidents across the state, something appreciated by none other than the Supreme Court of India.

Now Slow Drive Save Life is aiming to reduce accidents further.

Speeding often leads to accidents, and Slow Drive Save Life aims to make people throughout the state aware of that.

As part of the awareness drive, the police would request drivers to drive at reasonable speeds.

Road and lanes leading on to national and state highways would have bumps at the meeting points.

The police are already identifying places along highways which are hotspots for accidents and are marking them as ‘black spots’.

At these spots, the police are taking further measures including employing specially-trained civic volunteers.
The Safe Drive Save Life programme was launched in July 2016.

According to the state police, the number of road accident deaths in 2015 was 422, while in 2016 it reduced to 407.

The number of pedestrian deaths reduced from 218 in 2015 to 193 in 2016, which came down by a further 10 per cent in 2017.
