Commuters stage protest over delay in EMU trains

Chennai, Mar 15 : Commuters were put to hardship as Electrical Multiple Units (EMU) trains on the suburban Chengelpet–Tambaram-Beach section were delayed by more than an hour on Thursday.

Following this several commuters launched a protest by squatted on the tracks at the Guduvanchery railway station stating that there was “regular delay of trains” on the section.

Office-goers were put to a lot of hardship and the railway officials held talks and pacified the protesters and promised to take action.

Sources said a local EMU train that started from Chengelpet to Chennai Beach was halted at a crossing at Guduvanchery station. The routine halt was said to be only for a duration of two minutes initially, but it got extended to more than 20 minutes as the train did not move ahead.

In the meantime, two fast EMU trains were allowed to go under prioritisation, while making the local train wait for about 20 minutes.

Southern Railway sources said, incensed by the delay a few passengers sat on the tracks and staged a protest following which four trains subsequently were delayed.

However, normalcy was restored and train services resumed after the passengers withdrew their protest.
