Jammu, 20 February : Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Narayana Superspeciality Hospital (SMVDNSH), Katra infused a new lease of life into a 55-yr-old male patient suffering from Liver Cirrhosis by performing a rare lifesaving procedure. The man was not only suffering from Liver Cirrhosis, which is commonly known as Advanced Liver Failure, but also developed large duodenal ulcer, a sore on the upper part of the small intestine perforating into gall bladder ad part of liver. With this procedure, SMVDNSH Katra has earned a unique distinction among healthcare institutions across Jammu and Kashmir. Only a handful of hospitals across India, that too in big cities, perform this kind of surgery.

The patient was admitted at SMVDNSH after vomiting massive volume of blood. He was also passing dark black and tarry stool The attendants also reported that his Haemoglobin levels remained very low despite multiple blood transfusions that he had received previously in other hospital. Patient presented to SMVDNSH in a state of shock requiring drugs to maintain blood pressure.

A detailed clinical investigation revealed that the patient had upper gastrointestinal bleeding, advanced Liver Failure with massive fluid accumulation leading to a bulged abdomen and a large ulcer in the duodenum penetrating the gall bladder and liver

Understanding the gravity of his condition, a team of specialists led by Dr. Manoj Gupta, Consultant, Gastro Intestinal, Gastro Intestinal Oncology and Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary (HPB) Surgery, decided to provide a bypass for the gastric contents (food & drink), technically called Gastrojejunostomy and while also repairing the Duodenal Ulcer, removing damaged gall bladder & repairing part of liver.

According to Dr Manoj Gupta “The entire treatment approach was different owing to the high complications and critical conditions. It was necessary to provide a bypass to the gastric contents besides repairing the Duodenal Ulcer. Since it was a complicated case, it involved expertise and high degree of precision to perform the surgery. The surgery lasted over 2.5 hours and, with team effort we succeeded in treating the patient.”

Post procedure, the patient was kept on Oxygen inhalation and necessary transfusions. After monitoring him closely, he was discharged within six days of the surgery and is now doing well. Dr Manoj Gupta was assisted by Dr Naved Anjum Qureshi ,Dr. Amrita Kaul (Anesthetist), Mr. Lekhraj and team.
