Fresh WD to hit J&K on Wed; day remains pleasant in Kashmir

Srinagar, Feb 20 : A fresh Western Disturbance (WD) is likely to hit the region on Wednesday, which could result in rain and snow in Kashmir valley, where the night temperature improved though remained several degree below freezing point.

Meanwhile, summer-like weather continued during the day due to sunshine across the valley, including Srinagar, where the maximum temperature recorded on Monday was 5 degree above normal.

A Met department spokesperson told TNN that a fresh WD, which originated from Arabian Sea and is approaching the region through Afghanistan and Pakistan, will hit the region on Wednesday. “Light rain and snow is expected at isolated places in the state for three days from Wednesday under its influence,” he said.

He said rain and snow would occur at many places during the subsequent two days.

Kargil was the coldest place in the region after mercury dipped about a degree from Monday and settled at minus 11 degree Celsius, followed by neighbouring town of Leh, where the night temperature settled at minus 10.4 degree.

He said skies will be mainly clear during the next 24 hours in Leh, where maximum and minimum temperatures will be around 7 degree and minus 9 degree, respectively.

The night temperature in Srinagar witnessed some improvement though it settled about a degree below normal. Against minus 1.6 degree recorded on Monday, the night temperature in the summer capital was minus 0.9 degree. However, people woke up to a sunny Tuesday morning the Srinagar, where the mercury improved further as the day progressed.

He said skies will be partly cloudy during the next 24 hours in Srinagar, where maximum and minimum temperatures will be around 12 degree and minus 1 degree, respectively.

Gulmarg, about 55 km from here in north Kashmir, witnessed an improvement of 2 degree from Monday in the night temperature, which settled at minus 4 degree, about 3 degree above normal.

The mercury at world famous health resort of Pahalgam, about 100 km from here in south Kashmir, improved a degree from Monday and settled at minus 4.5 degree, which is normal temperature during this part of the year.

The night temperature at Qazigund, gateway to the valley, and Kupwara in north Kashmir also improved and settled at minus 1.6 degree and minus 2.2 degree, respectively.
