Rs 500 Cr sanctioned under PMDP; Rs 229 Cr released, Rs 61 Cr utilized

JAMMU: The State Police has utilized an amount of Rs 61 crore out of Rs 229 crore released under Prime Minister’s Development Package (PMDP) for police modernization.

Under the Prime Minister’s Development Package (PMDP) announced for Jammu and Kashmir in 2015, Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India has sanctioned an amount of Rs 500 crore for modernization of police in Jammu and Kashmir conveyed vide letter number 13030/86/2015 K-II dated October 5, 2017.

For High End Security and Law Order System (For Bullet Proof Vehicles/Equipment of J&K Police and CRPF), an amount of Rs 203.26 crore has been sanctioned while, for various activities viz. Central/District Command Centres Video Management System, Quick Response Centres, light weight BR Jackets, vests, bomb suites, hydraulic cranes shoot house, body protect suits, anti-riot equipments and CCTV surveillance system, an amount of Rs 296.74 crore has been sanctioned by the MHA, Government of India.

“The Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India has released an amount of Rs 200 crore as advance for procurement of different Bullet Proof Vehicles and BP equipments for J&K Police and CRPF,” State government said.

It further said, “So far, an amount of Rs 229.30 crore (Approximately) has been released and placed under the disposal of Director General of Police (DGP), Jammu and Kashmir against the approved allocation.”

It added, “Up to ending December 2017, an amount of Rs 61.33 crore has been utilized by the J&K Police.”
Pertinently, in the year 2015, the Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) had rapped the Jammu and Kashmir government for poor infrastructure and lack of basic facilities for the police force in the state.

However, since then, a number of measures have been launched by the State police to improve its infrastructure and other facilities for the police force and prisoners lodged in various jails across the state.
