Big Salute to Brave Women

The Women of India have into come their own. They are playing their roles in all walks of life shoulder to shoulder with men. There are women in Foreign Services, in Administrative Services, in medicine, in law, in education, in business, as company directors, as company operators, as stenographers, as receptionist, as air hostess, as Politicians and even the Prime Minister. Mrs. Indira Gandhi led them to the destination where sky is the limit. Now Women in Defence Services have even become a common sight and they have proved that they possess good capacity to handle their jobs. On Friday that went by, we all Indians had celebrated our 69th Republic Day with great enthusiasm. As per usual the Republic Day Parade, at Rajpath, New Delhi had some spectacular shows of culture and diversity to offer. However, one that stood in particular was the debut performance of SEEMA BHAWANI , the all- women BSF bike Troupe led by Sub- Inspector Stanzin Naryang from Ladakh. The Seema Bhawani performed breathtaking stunts in gravity defying formations. The 113-member team had women soldiers between 25 and 30 years of age, from different combat ranks. The Seema Bhawani actually replaced the male bikers who traditionally perform the Bike Stunts towards the end of Republic Day Parade. India flaunted its military powers and cultural diversity at the 69th Republic Day Parade at Rajpath in the presence of 10 ASEAN Leaders. That was the highlight of the iconic Parade. The team of BSF women performed Daredevils stunts on motorcycles, receiving a standing ovation from the spectators. BSF women really stole the Republic Day Parade show their Daredevils act. What a proud moment for our country.

The Contingent led by Sub-Inspector Stanzin Noryang received a rapturous applause from the crowd as they pulled off stunning formations such as Fish Riding, Side Riding, Faulad, Peacock and Saptarishi. Most of the women didn't even know how to ride a bike before being selected for the squad. As 28 year old Noryang who hails from Jammu and Kashmir's Ladakh was quoted as saying by the IANS, ‘I never thought of riding a bike because of fear. Now, I am confident of doing any stunt on the Royal Enfield Bullet.”

India has a long history of considering women as housewives and men as working individuals of family who took care of financial needs. But now there are changes and flexibility in the gender roles, which are being evident today has its roots in the changing social structure. So the women, whose status and role traditionally was well- defined and almost fixed in the society, is now experiencing far- reaching changes.

A big salute to these lionhearted women for BSF India who have gone on to set such awe-inspiring examples.

To quote Diane Mariechild- "A women is the full circle within her is the power to create, nurture and Transform."
