J&K witnesses 9 pc rise in Crime against women

JAMMU: The crime against women has been rising alarmingly in the state, with the year-on-year rise registered at around 9% in the year 2017. As per official data, 3168 cases of crime against women, including rapes, gang rapes, kidnapping, molestations, outraging modesty, eve- teasing, dowry death cases, abatement of suicides, among others, have been registered in the state last year as against 2,915 cases in 2016.
As per data, the year 2017 witnessed steady rise in the heinous crime against women in the state which include 2152 rape cases, 4 gang rape cases, 6518 kidnapping cases, 14,338 molestation and 132 dowry death cases.
The data presented by the Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti today in a written reply to a question of PDP MLA Anjum Fazili in the Assembly stated that 3,168 cases of crime against women have been registered in which 3,957 people have been arrested in 2017.However, in 2016, 2,915 such cases were registered in which 3,736 people were arrested.
While as many as 11,945 cases are pending under trial against 24,843 people at the end of the year in 2017, she said.
Speaking on abduction cases, she said that as many as 877 cases of abduction of girls and women have been registered in 2017, in comparison to 775 cases in 2016. She added that 534 people were arrested in abduction cases last year, while the number of arrests in 2016 was 479.
"There were as many as 3075 number of such under-trial cases last year in comparison to 3075 cases in 2016," she said.
Pertinently, a total of 1652 cases of abduction of women and girls have been registered during the last two years.
The chief minister said that several steps have been taken to curb the cases of crime against women and in this direction six women police stations have been established, besides further sanctioned five more women police stations.
Police is also conducting a round-the-clock patrolling at vulnerable places, particularly near schools, colleges and universities to maintain vigil over miscreants and eve- teasers, she said.
