JAMMU: An Army jawan on Saturday attained martyrdom in unprovoked firing by Pakistani troops as the neighbouring country violated the ceasefire along the Line of Control (LoC) in Rajouri district, on the auspicious occasion of Lohri.
In what was second instance of breaching the truce along the LoC by Pakistani troops in as many days, the Indian posts came under unprovoked firing from across the fence in the Sunderbani sector, prompting the Indian troops guarding the LoC to retaliate strongly and effectively, an Army spokesman said.
The indiscriminate shelling, however, resulted into injuries to one jawan, a native of Maharashtra, who later attained martyrdom, succumbing to his injuries. "Pakistan Army resorted to unprovoked firing at Indian positions on the Line of Control in Rajouri's Sunderbani sector which was retaliated effectively and strongly by Indian positions," Defence Ministry sources said.
However, one soldier, Lance Naik Yogesh Muralidhar Bhadane, was critically injured in the firing. He was taken to a hospital but succumbed to his critical injuries.
The brave heart, Lance Naik Bhadane, 28, belonged to Khalane village of Dhule district in Maharashtra. Bhadane is survived by his wife Punam Yogesh. The Army in its message, paid tributes to the martyr, asserting that his laying down his life for the honour of country, will be a debt, the country will always honour. "Lance Naik Yogesh Muralidhar Bhadane was a brave and sincere soldier. The nation will always remain indebted to him for the supreme sacrifice and devotion to duty," the official statement said.
Saturday's incident has come only a day after Pakistani troops had violated the ceasefire along the Line of Control in Poonch district, resulting in injuries to an Army jawan.
On Friday, Pakistan had started unprovoked firing in Malti area of Poonch district in which an army jawan, identified as Havildar Pushkar singh of Gorkha Rifles, posted in the forward post sustained splinter injuries.
Pertinently the slew of attacks has increased along the LoC and IB in recent days. A few days earlier, a BSF head constable was killed after Pakistani forces "sniped" from across the International Border in Samba district.
In retaliation, the BSF destroyed two Pakistani mortar positions, and had killed as many as ten Pakistani troopers, though it was not officially confirmed.
