Srinagar, Jan 13 : Army should not interfere in education sector, Education Minister Syed Altaf Bukhari on Saturday said, reacting to the statement of Chief of the Army Staff General Bipin Rawat that students in Jammu and Kashmir schools were being taught two maps.

The Army should not meddle with the education sector and rather concentrate on their own job, Mr Bukhari told journalists on the sideline of a function here.

The Minister's reaction came a day after General Rawat said teachers in Jammu and Kashmir schools were teaching two maps to the students — India and Jammu and Kashmir. Without naming anyone, the Minister said the people who are giving comments on how they should run education sector were not doing their job properly and that is why they were suffering.

Expressing displeasure over Gen Rawat’s comment, Mr Bukhari said everyone was passing comments on education sector which was not acceptable. He said even those who do not have domain in education sector are commenting on education, which was the job of those associated with this who also know how to run the sector.

General Rawat was quoted by media that in Jammu & Kashmir schools, what teachers are teaching should not be taught. In schools in J&K, there can be seen 2 maps, one of India another of J&K. Why do we need a separate map for J&K? What does it teach the children?” he had asked on Friday at a news conference in New Delhi.
