JAMMU: Notwithstanding the fact that December 31, 2017 is the deadline for the complete enrollment of school students of Jammu and Kashmir under the Aadhaar Project (Unique Identification), only 37% of the students have been issued the Unique Identification (UID) numbers so far.
Though the Ministry of Human Resources and Development, Government of India has fixed December 31, 2017 as deadline for the complete coverage of school students under the Aadhaar project, as with the use of UID numbers issued to the school students but the concerned authorities have covered only 37% of the students so far.
"The said move was primarily aimed to monitor and keep a track on various government programmes and schemes by linking the Aadhaar numbers with the database of the students to stop the misuse of funds by the state."
Sources told The News Now that out of total 22,69,886 registered government and private school students in Jammu and Kashmir, as on date, only 8,60,154 (around 37%) students have the biometric identity cards.
Project Director, Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA), Abdul Rashid War who is also the Registrar for the Aadhaar enrollment of school children, said, "The UIDAI has issued UID numbers to 37% students, but overall figures may differ, as some parents of the students have voluntarily enrolled their wards for the Aadhaar cards with the offices of respective Deputy Commissioners concerned."
He said, "In the first phase, we have set up around 100 centers in 6 districts of the state to enroll the children for biometric identity. Sooner, we're also going to set up 70 more centers to expedite the process for Aadhaar enrollment of children."
On who's been deployed to enroll the students, he said, "Services of non-teaching staff are being sought across the state to enroll the students." War also added that in Kashmir Valley the enrollment process has been stopped for the time being in view of the winter vacations but in some districts of Jammu Province, the enrollment is going on in full swing.
