Two-way traffic allowed on Mughal road, one-way on Leh highway
Srinagar, Nov 23: Two-way traffic has been allowed on the historic 86-km-long Mughal road, connecting south Kashmir with Jammu, though vehicles will ply from only one side on the Srinagar-Leh national highway as a precautionary measure following slippery road conditions.
Meanwhile, the 300-km-long Srinagar-Jammu national highway, linking Kashmir valley with the rest of the country, was also through for two-way light vehicular traffic though heavy vehicles will continue to ply from one side only.
A traffic police official told UNI on Thursday that two-way light vehicular traffic was allowed to ply since 0900 hrs on Mughal road, connecting Shopian in south Kashmir to Rajouri and Poonch in Jammu. “Due to slippery road condition, traffic could be allowed only after 0900 hrs,” he said.
However, he said no heavy vehicle will be allowed on the road from either side. “We will allow heavy traffic on the road only after further improvement in the weather and getting a green signal from the concerned officials,” he added.
One-way traffic on the Mughal road, which is seen as alternative to the Srinagar-Jammu national highway, was restored on Tuesday after remaining suspended for five days due to snowfall and slippery road conditions.
He said that only one-way traffic has been allowed on 434-km-long Srinagar-Leh, which connects Ladakh region with Kashmir valley. “Today, only one-way traffic from Sonmarg in Kashmir to Drass was allowed on the Srinagar-Leh highway,” he added.
Meanwhile, two-way light vehicular traffic was plying on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway.
However, the vehicles have to cross Jawahar tunnel by 1000 hrs. “On Thursday, heavy vehicles will be allowed from Srinagar to Jammu. No heavy vehicle will be allowed from opposite direction on the highway,” he added.
