Handwritten Quran with gold, Bhagwat Geeta attracts large crowd

Srinagar, Nov 21: Handwritten holy Quran with gold and Bhagwat Geeta besides 700-year-old books in Sanskrit, Persian and Kashmiri languages are attracting large number of people at World Heritage Week in Shehar-e-Khas (SeK).
The seven-day-long heritage week began at Gani Memorial Reading Centre, Rajouri Kadal in the SeK on November 19, when authorities had imposed restrictions in the area to prevent any law and order problem following strike called by separatists against Cordon and Search Operations (CASO) and killing of militants in the valley.
The libraries department showcased the rarest of the rare books, particularly in Sanskrit, Persian and Kashmir languages which are around 700-year-old.
The handwritten Quran with gold, Bhagwat Geeta, Encyclopedia of all living creatures in a paper machie art were showcased which are major attraction.
Some history books on Kashmir written on cloth and 1870 dated book of Hakim Luqman which includes his 100 advises to his son were also showcased.
The deputy Director Libraries, Shaheena said that the aim of celebrating the heritage week is to raise awareness about the heritage and to encourage its preservation, conservation and promotion.
“Such occasions serve a reminder that on the whole the society must get together to celebrate and preserve the spirit of heritage,” she said. “Every great culture and civilisation is known for its ability to showcase its heritage and work on its revival. It’s with that spirit that we are today celebrating the world heritage week.”
