Srinagar, Nov 19: Curfew like restrictions continued for the second successive day on Sunday in the downtown, Shehar-e-Khas (SeK) and areas under two police stations in the civil line and old city.

The historic Jamia Masjid also remained closed for devotees and security forces deployed in the Jamia market and outside to maintain and law and order.

Officials said District Magistrate (DM) Srinagar had imposed restrictions under Section 144 CrPC on Saturday morning in the areas under the jurisdiction of police Parimpora, Khanyar, Nowhatta, Safakadal, M R Gunj and Rainawari in the downtown and SeK in Srinagar.

“Partial restrictions have also been imposed in Maisuma in the civil lines and Kralkhud in the old city,” they said.

On Saturday, restrictions were imposed as a precautionary measure following the death of a militant and police Sub Inspector in an encounter in Zakoora area of the city outskirts on Friday evening.

Restrictions continued on Sunday following strike called by separatists against daily Cordon and Search Operation (CASO) by security forces and killing of militants in the valley.

However, the situation on the ground was entirely different as all main roads remained closed with barbed wire and parked bullet proof vehicles in the middle to prevent any traffic or pedestrian movement in these areas.

The entire Nallahmar road from Nawa Kadal to Khanyar had been closed and large number of security forces and state police personnel remained deployed to strictly implement the restrictions. The road presented a deserted look with only security forces, wearing bullet proof jackets, deployed after every 10 feet. The road had been closed with barbed wire at several places and people are directed to remain indoors.

Residents on both sides of the road alleged that they are facing shortage of essentials, particularly milk, bread and vegetables.

However, the road to S K Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) through Eidgah in the downtown was open. However, only ambulances and patients were being allowed after verifying their identity cards and prescriptions.

Security forces were allowing patients and ambulances besides medical staff to go to SKIMS though alternative bylane at Gojwara, where the main road had been closed with barbed wire. Similarly, main road was also closed at Firdous Cinema, where people coming from outskirts were being directed to return to their homes.
