Security forces burst teargas shells and resorted to lathicharge to disperse stone pelting demonstrators during Cordon and Search Operation (CASO) in north Kashmir district of Bandipora. Official sources said that on a tip off about the presence of militants, troops of Rashtriya Rifles (RR), Special Operation Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir police and CRPF launched a joint search operation at Kochak and Parray Mohallas in Bandipora on Tuesday morning.

However, when the security forces were conducting searches, people outside the cordoned off area hit the streets and started shouting slogans and pelting stones. Additional security forces deployed in the area immediately swung into action and prevented the demonstrators going towards the cordoned off 'mohallas'.

As the demonstrators refused to disperse and continued stone pelting, security forces burst teargas shells and resorted to lathicharge to prevent them from moving towards the area. However, despite protests, security forces completed the CASO, they said, adding that no one was arrested during the operation. On October 12, two LeT militants, including a self-styled commander, were killed in the encounter with security forces. Two Air Force Commandos were also martyred in the encounter.
