SRINAGAR: After shelling Indian villages in Poonch along the Line of Control for three consecutive days, Pakistani troops on Sunday opened another front as they targeted forward Indian posts on the LoC in Keran sector in the frontier district of Kupwara.
The firing from across the border resulted in injuries to an Army jawan.
The injured jawan was identified as Rajesh Khatri, who was later airlifted to Srinagar for treatment.
The official sources informed that Pakistani troops resorted to indiscriminate unprovoked firing from across the LoC in Keran sector, targeting forward posts and civilian areas.
Indian troops also retaliated, they said.
"One of our jawan has suffered injuries in the firing and was airlifted to Srinagar hospital for treatment," they said, adding that the casualties suffered by Pakistani troops was not immediately clear.
Pakistan has been shelling the forward villages in Poonch for last three days, which has resulted in death of an Army jawan and a defence porter, while as many as 10 people have sustained bullet and splinter injuries over the past three days.
Meanwhile, two-faced as it is, Pakistan on Sunday summoned India's Deputy High Commissioner for the third time this month over the alleged "ceasefire violations" by Indian troops along the Line of Control, claiming that two children were killed in the firing.
The Foreign Office, in a statement, alleged that Indian forces resorted to firing in Kotli/Nokial sector yesterday which killed two children.
The Foreign Ministry said that it summoned the Indian envoy to protest the "unprovoked" violation of a 2003 cease- fire by the Indian forces.
"Despite calls for restraint, India continues to indulge in ceasefire violations, it said.
"The deliberate targeting of civilians is indeed deplorable and contrary to human dignity and international human rights and humanitarian laws, it said.
It said that the "ceasefire violations by India are a threat to regional peace and security and may lead to a strategic miscalculation".
It said that the Indian side should permit UNMOGIP to play its mandated role as per the UN Security Council resolutions.
India maintains that the UNMOGIP has outlived its utility and is irrelevant after the Simla Agreement and the consequent establishment of the Line of Control.
Deputy High Commissioner J P Singh was earlier summoned on October 2 and October 4 over the alleged "ceasefire violations".
