Rare ballooning case done at Sudan Heart Care Centre

JAMMU: A deaf and mute woman, who is unable to speak or hear by birth, underwent successful Ballooning of Mitral Valve for the second time at Sudan Heart Care Centre here in Jammu.
The patient Babli Devi is suffering from rheumatic heart disease, which affects the valves of the heart causing their narrowing or leaking.
Rheumatic heart disease occurs mainly in poor living conditions in early childhood. This case is unique as she had undergone ballooning in year 2002 done by Dr. Dinesh Sudan, who is a renowned Cardiologist and DM Gold Medalist from AIIMS.
Speaking to Dr. Dinesh Sudan after the procedure, he said that this is a rare case, where a deaf and mute patient of rheumatic heart disease underwent Ballooning of Mitral Valve after a gap of 15 years by the same operating doctor.
The case was a challenge due to lack of communication with the patient and frail patient, which increases the difficulty level of the procedure, he said, adding, the procedure could have been under general anesthesia but that its own set of added chances of complications.
Ultimately, the patient’s sister, who is also her caretaker, was stationed in the Cath Lab in scrubs (theatre dress) and procedure was completed with light sedation.
Dr. Dinesh Sudan said that balloon Mitral Valvotomy for Mitral Stenosis i.e., narrowing of Mitral Valve is a standard procedure, which has replaced the surgical treatment of same condition called Closed Mitral Valvotomy (CMV).
