Govt mulls increasing numberdars' remuneration to attract youth

SRINAGAR: In a bid to attract the youth towards different positions in village administration, the state government has been contemplating to decrease age-bar and hike remuneration for the posts of Numberdars and Chowkidars.
Officials in the Revenue department revealed that the government has recently formed a two-member committee of senior officials to make a proposal of the plan which aims at pulling the youth at the administrative positions within the villages of the state by increasing the remuneration in lieu of their services as Numberdars and Chowkidars.
The committee comprises of Commissioner Secretary Revenue, Muhammad Ashraf Mir and Commissioner Secretary Law, Abdul Majid Bhat.
"The two senior officials have been assigned the task of making a draft of the proposal about making Numberdars and Chowkidars youth-attractive," the officials said, adding that the duo would submit their proposal within 15 days.
The age-bar for becoming a numberdar will be kept between 25-40 years.
"Youth falling in this age group will be eligible to become numberdars and chowkidars," the officials said.
"The remuneration will be proposed to be hiked to Rs 5000," officials said, adding that the hike in remuneration will be discussed with finance department.
Recently, Minister for Revenue Abdul Rehman Veeri held a high-level meeting in which he said that Government was taking many initiatives to bring vibrancy in the institution of Numberdars and Chowkidars at the village level.
Veeri said that strengthening the numberdars and institutions would also ensure transparency and accountability in implementation of various programmes.
The NC-Congress government has said that separate rooms for Numberdars and Chowkidars at all the Patwarkhanas and Niabats in the State will be constructed for ensure their full involvement in disposing of revenue matters within their jurisdiction.
"Chowkidars and Numberdars are pillars of the rural society and help Revenue and other line Departments in implementation of various government policies in rural areas," officials said.
The meeting was attended by financial commissioner Revenue Lokesh Jha, divisional commissioner Kashmir Baseer Ahmed Khan, settlement commissioner Shahid Inayatullah, secretary Revenue Muhammad Ashraf Mir, Law secretary Abdul Majeed Bhat and other officials.
