JU Student Union's Election

JAMMU: In a petition filed by Yashu Vardhan Singh & Ors seeking quashment of the guidelines and norms 2016, floated by the respondents for conduct of elections to Students Union 2017-18, being violative of Lyngdoh Committee recommendations, the state high court on Thursday ordered for ad-interim, subjecting till next date the entire election process to further outcome of petition while restraining varsity authorities to declare final result of the election.
After hearing Adv Vikram Sharma appearing for the petitioners and Adv Anil Sethi appearing for the Jammu University, Justice JR Kotwal observed that the election and election process relating to Students' Union of the Jammu University is assailed in this writ petition on the ground that some of the guidelines issued by the University relating to eligibility and holding of the Election are contrary to Lyngdoh Committee's Report accepted by the Supreme Court.
Earlier Adv Anil Sethi appearing for the Jammu University seeks short adjournment to file reply.
Pertinently clashes between the two groups took place September 18 during campaigning for the first phase of the students union election scheduled for September 25 at the university.
Department and class representatives would be elected as executive members in the first phase of the union election. The elected student representatives from each department would form an electoral college who will elect the office- bearers of the union, the voting for which will take place in the second phase on October 6.
