Three died, 13 injured in Tripura flood so far

With the receding of flood water death toll started rising in Agartala and in past three days as many as three teenagers died and 13 injured so far while water contamination in a few places triggered entities in the affected localities. Police said an 11-year-old girl was found floating in their family-owned pond at Madhya Pratapgarh yesterday. The deceased was identified as Neha Dey. She went on missing from the house on August 11 last when the locality was submerged. The family members could not locate her when rescue team reached for evacuation. Neighbours alarmed the cops after they found the body floating yesterday but could not able to identify Neha.

Later, police accompanied by fire service crews recovered the body from the pond and sent for post-mortem, police said, adding that investigation begins to identify the reason. “If the case is drowning, the victim’s family will get a compensation of Rs 4 lakh and we are waiting for her post-mortem report”, said District Magistrate West Tripura Dr Milind Ramteke adding police is investigating to make sure if the death is a case of drowning. In a separate incident, a youth was found hanging opposite to the science building of Maharaja Bir Bikram College of Agartala. The deceased was 25-year-old and probe began to make sure if the death was suicide or homicide, police said. Another youth was reported missing from Baldakhal locality of Agartala. Police couldn't furnish details of the case.

According to report, one Suman Sarkar of Ranirbazar died by drowning while he was trying to fish on the turbulent Howrah River yesterday afternoon. The body is still missing. A Class IX student was electrocuted on August 13 last in Agartala while rafting in flood water. On the other, body of a premature infant has been found on flood water last evening at Dragonpara under Jolaibari area of South Tripura. According to police, the body has started decomposing observing which police has suspected the baby was 6-7 days old.

The health minister Badal Choudhury however, sated that disaster management authority has taken all out effort to prevent outbreak of any disease in flood affected areas and said, “The administration has constitute special medical team to oversee the emergency healthcare in the affected areas.” He said flood water receded from the localities and most of the families have returned home and administration is assessing the loss and damage caused due to flash flood, which left about 56,000 people homeless and about a hundred houses were damaged.
