Restrictions lifted, deployment continues in downtown, SeK

Curfew-like restrictions imposed in Shehar-e-Khas (SeK) and downtown in Srinagar as a precautionary measure to prevent any law and order problem yesterday when separatist had called for a strike against alleged attempts to abrogate Article 35-A, have been lifted. There is no restriction in any part of the downtown and SeK today, officials said.

However, deployment of security forces and state police personnel would continue to maintain law and order. Both the factions of Hurriyat Conference (HC) and Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) had called for strike alleging that attempts are being made to abrogate Article 35-A of the Indian Constitution.

However, apprehending trouble, authorities imposed restrictions under Section 144 CrPC in the areas falling under five police stations of Nowhatta, M R Gunj, Rainawari, Khanyar and Safakadal -- in the SeK and downtown Srinagar since early yesterday morning. All road blocks, including barbed wire, had been removed. However, security forces and state police personnel remained deployed in strength to prevent any agitation. Shops and business establishments are open and traffic was plying on all routes normally. Gates of historic Jamia Masjid are open today for devotees.
