Heavy vehicular traffic allowed on Mughal road; Kashmir, Leh highway open

Srinagar, Jul 20: One-way heavy vehicular traffic has been allowed on historic Mughal road, linking Shopian in south Kashmir with Rajouri and Poonch in Jammu region, after remaining suspended for about eight months.

However, one-way light vehicular traffic was allowed on the Mughal road on April 23 after remaining closed for winter months due to accumulation of heavy snow. The road was made operational for two-way traffic for light vehicles from June 8. Traffic is plying normally on Srinagar-Jammu National Highway, connecting Kashmir with the rest of the country, and 434-km-long Leh highway, linking Ladakh with the Valley.

''Heavy Motor Vehicles from Srinagar to Jammu have been allowed to ply on Mughal road since early this morning,'' a traffic police official told UNI. He said all the un-laden empty trucks and fruit laden trucks (six tyre trucks only) except multi axle vehicles can adopt Mughal road from Srinagar to Jammu.

''The movement of HMVs shall continue to be one-way till further orders and movement of these vehicles (HMVs) from Shopian towards Behramgalla shall be allowed on alternate days,'' he said. He said further informed that the movement of these vehicles shall be allowed strictly between 0900 hrs to 1600 hrs only and all the vehicles shall cross Peer Ki Gali before 1700 hrs every day.
