With 5 to 7 Kg heroin pouring in daily, Jammu sits on narcotic 'powder keg'

JAMMU: The winter capital Jammu has become a hot transit point for smuggling of narcotic substances. Besides, the consumption of drugs in Jammu is also increasing alarmingly leaving the police officials highly worried. The increasing consumption of drugs, especially Heroin, has become a hot topic of discussion in every crime review meeting of the district police. Officials say that on the average, 5 to 7 kg Heroin is coming to Jammu on a daily basis.
The increasing consumption and smuggling can be gauged from the fact that Jammu Police registered 10 FIRs in 20 days and seized 38 kg narcotic substance.
On an average, one FIR is registered in district Jammu daily under NDPS Act, say officials. As per data available, seven FIRs were registered in different police stations of Jammu district under NDPS Act with the recovery of 22 kg narcotic substance, including 12.5 kg Ganja, 9.150 kg Charas and 6 gram Heroin.
Moreover, two FIRs were also registered in Narwal and Nagrota on Monday. In both the cases, the consignments were supplied to Jammu from Punjab and Kashmir.
Talking to The News Now, SSP Jammu Sunil Gupta confirmed that Jammu is turning into a hot transit point as consignments come from Kashmir and Poonch and are then dispatched to metro cities.
He said that meetings of senior police officers are being held on daily basis to formulate strategy to make Jammu drugs-free and end smuggling.
As a result, special teams of policemen in civil dress have been constituted and they have seized consignments almost on a daily basis.
On the basis of the seizures so far, senior police officers say that drugs are being brought to Jammu from Rajasthan, Damtal in Punjab, Jharkhand and South Kashmir via trans-border smuggling.
The Narwal police nabbed two Rajasthan-based youths and recovered 10 kg Ganja from them.
The accused identified as Rohit Kumar, son of Ram Singh, resident of village Ajitpura, Hanumangarh, Rajasthan at present Sector No. 6 Mohali, and Manoj Kumar, son of Sohan Lal of Hanumangarh, Rajasthan at present Sector No. 56, Chandigarh.
They had brought the consignment from Chandigarh for sale in Jammu. "The Ganja was meant to be sold among the youth of Jammu," said a senior police officer.
An FIR No. 119/2017 u/s 8/20 NDPS Act was registered against the two accused at Bahu Fort Police Station.
Nagrota Police also seized 5.4 kg Charas from one Imtiyaz Mohiudin, son of Ghulam Mohiudin Shah of Bijbehara. Imtiyaz was caught from a Tempo Traveller coming from Kashmir during naka checking.
The Narcotic Control Bureau also confirmed that smuggling of narcotics was on rise and claimed to have seized 12.5 kg Charas and 560 Codorex bottles in a week.
NCB officials say that a large quantity of Charas and banned Codorex are smuggled from Kashmir's Anantnag district to metro cities. The synthetic drugs come to Anantnag from across the border, said NCB officials.
12.5 kg Charas was seized in Jammu while the Codorex bottles were seized from a truck at Lakhanpur in district Kathua.
During questioning, the drug traffickers confessed that they brought the consignment from Anantnag and supplied to metro cities and get hefty amount from the gang there.
NCB officials said that another 3.98 kg Charas was seized from two Anantnag-based drug smugglers at Kujwani earlier in March while 8.4 kg Charas was recovered from a Santro car on way to Maharastra. NCB officials arrested three smugglers in the car at Jajjar Kotli. They also confessed that the consignment was being taken to Mumbai from Anantnag.
The NCB officials also recovered 580 bottles of banned cough syrup Codorex from a truck on way to New Delhi at Lakhanpur. The truck was also loaded from Kashmir's Anantnag district, adding, the driver of the truck was arrested.
