Karnataka most corrupt state in India, J&K on number 5

New Delhi, Apr 28: A survey has put Jammu and Kashmir at number five in the list of most corrupt states in India, a media report said today.
The survey which has covered 20 states has found Karnataka as the most corrupt state in the country.
77 per cent of respondents in Karnataka said they experienced corruption in accessing public services, it said.
“The percentage for Andhra Pradesh was 74, Tamil Nadu 68, Maharashtra 57, Jammu and Kashmir 44 and Punjab 42,” the report said.
The survey conducted by the Centre for Media Studies covering around 3000 persons in rural as well as urban areas, found that in terms of corruption, Karnataka is number one, followed by Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.
The less corrupt states are Himachal Pradesh, Kerala and Chhattisgarh.
The survey covered around 3000 people from various states of the country. According to the survey, around one-third of the households had their brush with corruption in public services at least once during the last one year. While as in 2005, about 53 per cent of households had experienced corruption in public services.
A similar study conducted in 2005 had said that the most corrupt states were Bihar, Jammu and Kashmir, Odisha, Rajashthan and Tamil Nadu.
According to the survey, the respondents also felt that following the decision of demonetisation, the level of corruption in public sector had decreased.
The survey also found that in 2017, the total bribe paid by households in the 20 states and 10 public services was Rs. 6,350 crore whereas the same figure in the year 2010 stood at Rs. 20,500 crore.
"More than half of the respondents felt the level of corruption decreased during that period (November-December last year) while 12 per cent opined that graft had increased in that period. 21 per cent felt it had remained the same," the survey said.
