World class Chenani-Nashri tunnel set to take off, PM to inaugurate on Apr 2

Jammu, Mar 28: The much awaited World class Chenani-Nashri tunnel is all set to take off once inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on April 2 in Udhampur district of Jammu and Kashmir. Asia's longest tunnel having a distance of 9.2 Km will help commuters to have safe and secure journey especially during rainy season due to which landslide hit highway remains blocked for traffic.

Briefing the media today ahead of tunnel's inauguration scheduled for April 2, Aashutosh Chandwar, Regional Head, IL&S said that it is hi-tech and gadgets fitted tunnel, which will cater vehicles of all kind except those carrying inflammable items. "Oil tankers, gas kit fitted vehicles or any other vehicle having inflammatory items, will not be allowed to pass through the tunnel," said Mr Chandwar. He added that closed circuit cameras are also fitted in the tubes, which will monitor every activity of the vehicles passing through it, adding, "at a distance of every 300 to 400 meters, exchange system has also been set up which will help the travellers to contact our helpers in the case of any emergency."

The official further added that speed limit has also been fixed for the vehicles passing through the tunnel adding that another tunnel adjacent to the operational called as 'escape tunnel' has been kept reserve for urgency case if the the T-1 suffer any operational hiccup. Mr Chandwar further added that it is a first of its kind tunnel in the world fitted with unique technology and completed in a record period of four years. "It is completely a dry tunnel as there is no scope of water from the rocks and mountains entering to it," he asserted
