About to fly with Rs 7 lakh gold, man made to pay tax

JAMMU: A man carrying gold worth Rs 7.72 lakh to evade tax was today held at Jammu Airport, by the police during frisking. In view of the increased alertness of anti-hijacking police, security staff detected one passenger Suhail Mir, son of Abdul Qayoom Mir, resident of Srinagar travelling from Jammu to Srinagar, SSP Anti-hijacking, Rajinder Gupta here said. He said the man was carrying 335 grams in the shape of jewellery amounting to Rs 7.72 lakh purchased from Malabar Gold and Diamonds-AL Watan Centre, Dubai. He added that the matter was brought to the notice of Khalid Majeed, Deputy Commissioner, Commercial taxes (V&I), Jammu who imposed a penalty of Rs 23,142 for tax evasion. A large number of tax evaders have been caught at Airport in the last one month.
