Old notes turn new headache for Police

JAMMU: The Jammu and Kashmir Police in Bari Brahmna are exploring legal options to dispose of wads of scrapped currency notes as Income Tax department and Enforcement Directorate are believed to have refused to 'oblige'
A cop said "seizure of the old currency has become new headache for us as neither Income Tax Department nor Enforcement Directorate were willing to accept case, forcing police to book the accused persons under relevant laws".
The incident took place at Bari Brahmana in district Samba where Police detained two persons and recovered Rs 7.5 lakh old currency in denomination of Rs 500 and 1000.
Police said that based on inputs that two persons were carrying old currency notes to Chandigarh, a naka was laid in the area and the cops detained two persons.
They have been identified as Shashi Sharma son of Nanak Dass, resident of Bari Brahmana , a property dealer, and Raj Pal son of Naseeb Chand of R.S Pura, an ex Sarpanch of village Darsopur .
From their possession, police recovered Rs 7.5 lakh old currency note.
"Soon after the seizure, police made contact with the Income Tax Department to take up the case and after having 'No', a contact was made to the Enforcement Directorate and from there police get disappointment", said a senior police officer.
Both the agencies said no terming the catch as wastage for them, said police.
Later, police consulted with the Prosecuting Officers and booked them under relevant law. Both the accused were later produced before the Court.
