People continue to shiver as temp remains below freezing point in Kashmir

Srinagar, Jan 21: There was still no respite from cold weather conditions as temperature remained below freezing point in Kashmir Valley, where light rain and snow is predicted during the next 48 hours. However, Leh and border town of Kargil in Ladakh witnessed some improvement in the night temperature though they were still the coldest places in region at minus 13.9 degree Celsius and minus 14 degrees C respectively. Meanwhile, a fresh Western Disturbance (WD) will likely hit the state tomorrow, which could cause moderate to heavy snowfall in Jammu and Kashmir. A Met Department spokesperson told UNI that light rain or snow would occur at isolated places during the next 48 hours in the state. Even though there was an improvement of one notch in the night temperature in Kargil, the border town was still the coldest place in the region at minus 14 degrees C followed by Leh, where mercury surged and settled at minus 13.9 degrees C, against minus 16.8 degrees C recorded yesterday. “The skies will be mainly clear in Leh, where maximum and minimum temperatures will be around zero and minus 16 degree respectively tomorrow,” he told UNI. Famed ski resort of Gulmarg, where the world class slopes are already under several feet of snow, witnessed an improvement of about two degrees in the night temperature though it was still the coldest place in the valley. The mercury at Gulmarg, which attracts skiers, tourists and adventure lovers from all over the globe because of its ski slopes during winter season, surged and settled at minus 10 degrees, against minus 11.8 degrees C recorded yesterday. The night temperature was about three degree below normal. People woke up to yet another chilly morning in Srinagar, where night temperature witnessed a dip of about three degrees during the night. Against minus 0.9 degrees C recorded yesterday, the night temperature was minus 3.3 degree, which is over a degree below normal. The maximum temperature in the summer capital also witnessed a dip and settled at two degree below normal.
