4 drug peddlers arrested, contraband recovered in Kashmir

Srinagar: Police arrested four drug peddlers and recovered contraband from them in two separate places in Kashmir valley.

A police spokesperson said that following specific information about transportation of drugs, a checkpoint was established at Shadipora Bridge in central Kashmir district of Ganderbal on Wednesday. “Police signaled a vehicle to stop at the checkpoint. But the driver increased the speed of the vehicle and tried to flee from the spot,” he said.

However, he said the naka party tactfully stopped the vehicle, adding three persons onboard were apprehended. “The accused were identified as Hilal Ahmad Mir, Irfan Ahmad Rather and Muneeb Ahmad Beigh. During checking, officers were able to recover 45 bottles of Codeine phosphate from their possession,” he said.

He said similarly a police party intercepted a suspicious person at a checkpoint near Tehsil office Tarathpora in north Kashmir district of Kupwara and recovered 300 grams of brown sugar. “The accused, identified as Maroof Ahmad Badana, was immediately taken into custody,” he added.

He said the accused drug peddler is a notorious drug dealer, who is involved in supplying drugs among the youth of the area. “Cases under relevant sections of law have been registered in respective police stations and further investigation has been initiated,” he said.

He said community members are requested to come forward with any information regarding drug peddlers in their neighbourhood, adding persons found indulging in drug peddling will be dealt as per law. “Our consistent actions against drug peddlers should reassure the community members that we are making efforts to keep our society free from the scourge of drug menace,” he added.
