SMC passes resolution to rename areas after ex- legislature, leader killed by ultras

SRINAGAR: The Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) has passed a resolution to rename two areas in the city after the former legislature and social and political leader, who were killed by militants.
The resolution was passed during the general session of Srinagar Municipal Corporation which was held at SMC Corporator Hall today. The general session was presided by the Srinagar Municipal Corporation Mayor Junaid Azim Mattu and was attended by SMC Commissioner Athar Amir, corporators and other officials of the department.
As per the resolution passed, the Botshah Mohalla Chowk Zabidal area has been renamed as Peer Shafi chowk and Chowdhary Bagh at Moti Mohalla has been renamed as Shaheed Aga Syed Mehdi road. The resolution was passed unanimously in the 14th general council meeting.
“SMC General Council today unanimously adopted my resolution to name the Chowdhary Bagh to Mir Behri Dal Road as the Shaheed Aga Syed Mehdi Road. Shaheed Aga Sahab, a renowned social, religious and political leader was assassinated by militants on 3rd November 2000”, SMC Mayor Junaid Mattu wrote on Twitter.
Aga Syed Mehdi was a prominent Kashmiri Shia leader and social activist. He was the son of Aga Syed Mustafa Moosavi. Aga Syed Hassan Almoosavi and Aga Syed Mohsin Al Mosvi are the brothers of Aga Syed Mehdi. He was assassinated in an IED blast on Friday 3 November 2000.
In another tweet, Mayor said, “SMC General Council also unanimously adopted a resolution brought by Danish Bhat to name Botshah Mohalla Chowk in Zadibal as the Shaheed Peer Muhammad Shafi Chowk. A former legislator, Peer Mohammad Shafi was assassinated by militants at his residence in August 1991”.
Peer Mohammad Shafi was an ex-MLA Zadibal and was associated with the National Conference. Shafi was killed by militants in August 1991. Meanwhile, an official affiliated with the passing of the resolution said that so far just the resolution has been passed by the Srinagar Municipal Corporation. It has to go through various concerned departments before the name of the roads will be changed.
