New York, Sep 11: Novak Djokovic stormed into the summit clash of the US Open by defeating Alexander Zverev 4-6, 6-2, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 in a tense semifinal thriller on Saturday.

World number 1 Djokovic was outclassed by Zverev in the first set, but as always the Serb bounced back and clinched the next two sets.

At 5-4 in the third set, Djokovic showed his class when he engaged Zverev in a 53-ball rally.

Just when Djokovic needed just one set to go through to the summit clash, Zverev stunned him in the fourth set, winning it 6-4.

As always, Djokovic has this habit of saving his best tennis for last, took his level up another notch in the fifth to outdo Zverev and pocketed the deciding set. He wore down Zverev by his inimitable returns and never-take-a-rest defence.

With this win, Djokovic is on the verge of staking his claim as the greatest men's tennis player of all time.

A victory over second-seeded Daniil Medvedev Sunday would make him the first man since Rod Laver in 1969 to win the calendar Grand Slam.
