Srinagar, Apr 15: Police have registered a case in the summer capital, Srinagar, against a teacher, who was seen thrashing a student in a video, which went viral on social media, attracting huge criticism from the netizens.

In the video, the teacher could be seen slapping the student repeatedly during a chemistry class in a private coaching centre – HOPE – in Parraypora, Srinagar. The video went viral on social media, attracting huge criticism and demand for strict action against the teacher and the coaching centre.

A police officer said that police has taken cognisance of the matter and an FIR registered at Police Station Sadder in Srinagar. “Legal action has been initiated against the individual and the coaching centre concerned for investigation of this case,” he added.

The video was initially posted by the J&K students Association spokesperson on his twitter handle, which identified the teacher as Fayaz Ahmad Zewali. The video later went viral on social media.

Terming the thrashing of the student as unacceptable, Srinagar Mayor Junaid Azim Mattu said the need to regulate coaching institutes in Srinagar cannot be overemphasized. “We are party to the Convention on the Rights of the Child. Standard of ‘the best interests of the child’ is now a part of domestic law. Will seek stringent punishment against the teacher under Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Chidren) Act, 2000 and IPC 323, 325 and 506,” he wrote on micro-blogging site twitter.

Mattu said as a humble student of law - the teacher and the coaching center management should have been booked and arrested the moment this video surfaced. “AND the center sealed as per the JJ Act! This is a criminal act, not a civil law violation. The IPC and JJ Act can’t be muted,” he added.

Similar views were expressed by other netizens, who criticized the teacher for thrashing the student and demanded strict action against him. “Is this how we build self esteem in our students. Grades that students secure in subjects are not going to decide their future. If we cannot accept children for what they are, if we don’t know how to develop sense of responsibility in our students, if we fail to work on their sense of ownership, we are a complete misfit in this Profession Mr Fayaz Better consider a change of profession asap and be at a place where u deal with products and mend the dents using hammers,” a tweet read.

“Why this Humiliation & brutality. This behaviour is not acceptable at any cost! The student doesn't need to seek permission in the first place.*May i come in Sir* is what actually disturbs the Class,” another tweet read.
