Jammu:More than one-year after the Ladakh region was created as new Union Territory with re-organisation of Jammu and Kashmir in 2019 post abrogation of Article 370, the Government of Jammu and Kashmir has ‘officially’ handed over the Satellite Campuses at Kashmir University to the Ladakh UT.
Official sources here said that the Jammu and Kashmir government has ‘officially’ handed over the Leh and Kargil satellite campuses of Kashmir University to the Union Territory of Ladakh.
“The General Administrative Department has also issued a formal order in this regard,” official sources said and added that according to the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganization Act 2019, the Ladakh Administration including the satellite campus staff located at Taru in Leh and Silskot in Kargil are being handed over.
They further said that previously, the Jammu and Kashmir government had administrative control over the Leh and Kargil campuses, adding, “the government has decided to start Cluster University Leh from these campuses in Leh and Kargil districts to further strengthen the education sector.”
“Although administrative control of both the campuses was already handed over to the Ladakh UT, now officially all the posts, staff and other items of these institutions have also been handed over to the Ladakh administration,” an official said.
The order is issued by the Commissioner Secretary, General Administrative Department, Manoj Dwivedi.
“There are about 45 posts of teaching and non-teaching in Leh and Kargil campuses,” sources said and added that according to Kashmir University officials, out of these 45 posts, only 18 were filled and rest of the posts were currently vacant.”
Meanwhile, sources said that the Kashmir University has also demanded in its last meeting to create the sanctioned posts for LehandKargil for various other posts at University in Kashmir.
“The creation of these posts will further strengthen the campus at Kupwara,” sources asserted.
Pertinent to mention here that both Kargil and Leh regions of Ladakh UT has already become a divided house over establishment of recently announced Central University for the UT.
The Kargil has been demanding separate identity asserting that it doesn’t recognize the Union Territory status of Ladakh and further, the setting up of Central University announced by the Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in the recent budget, has become debatable across the Ladakh UT.
Ladakh Lieutenant Governor R K Mathur termed the Central University decision as important and said that it will give a boost to higher education in the newly created Union Territory.
“In the Union Government’s budget, a provision of Rs 5,958 crore has been made for speeding up development in Ladakh. This will give impetus to the central projects meeting the expectations of the people of Leh and Kargil districts,” an official said.
He also added that on the other hand, with the announcement of the creation of Central University in Ladakh, the issue has also started gaining momentum whether the University will be established in Leh or Kargil.
Earlier the decision of making the Union Territory of Ladakh headquartered in Leh was also opposed in Kargil.
