Book Review: "A Quest of Souls" by Rohit Kumar

Delving into themes of dream sequences to connect different plot points is usually seen in movies and television series. Storylines of books mostly associate with contemplative musings to do the same. However, many authors are experimenting with dream sequences to further the book’s storylines. The author Rohit Kumar has come out with one such book “A Quest of Souls”, which incorporates surrealistic perspectives in a realistic story.

The storyline follows Arjun, who experiences mysterious, story-like dreams. As he is haunted by his dreams, he must find a cure. Young Mani finds himself entangled in the case of the death of a little girl, with his future at stake. Advita is chained to her painful past. Her friend Elisabeth needs to re-learn to have faith in relationships.

Brought together by Arjun’s pursuit to find the cure to his disturbing dream, the lives of all these characters become intertwined in this journey. Will Arjun’s dream ever stop haunting him? Is Mani guilty and will Advita ever find peace with herself again? The narrative then goes on to answer these questions.

The book features an ensemble of characters, and their storylines of emotional heft coalesce in different settings. Also, each of the characters is instrumental to the furthering of the narrative, and almost equal agency and significance is given to each protagonist. Even the minor characters are not relegated to the sidelines.

The dream sequence plot packs a punch, and the simple and elegant writing elevates the story even in its mundane parts. Many of the dialogues are compelling, and are quote-worthy. There are many twists and turns in the narrative, and the mystery will definitely keep the readers on the edge of their seats, wanting to know what happens next.

Many parts in this novel have their shining moments. However, at many instances, the storyline appears rushed and not as much nuanced as to the readers’ liking. There are editing glitches too, and many parts of the narrative are relatively bland.

This novel should be read by those who like stories having illusory elements amalgamated in realistic storylines, and those looking for a short and simple read, peppered with surreal conundrums and mystery.
