Jammu: In a shocking incident, three BJP workers, including a youth leader, were shot dead by militants in district Kulgam of Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday evening.
The Resistance Front (TRF), believed to be a shadow group of the Lashkar-e-Taiba, has claimed responsibility for the killings.
“Today at about 2020 hours, Kulgam Police received information about a terror crime incident at village YK Pora, where terrorists had fired upon three BJP workers. Senior police officers reached at the crime spot," the police said in a statement.
They were shifted to a nearby hospital for treatment, where they were declared as brought dead.
"Preliminary investigation revealed that terrorists fired on three BJP workers, identified as Fida Hussain Yatoo, son of Ghulam Ahmad Yatoo, resident of YK Pora (BJP District Youth General secretary); Umer Rashid Beigh, son of Abdul Rasheed Beigh, resident of Sophat Devsar (BJP worker); and Umer Ramzan Hajam, son of Mohd Ramzan, resident of YK Pora (BJP worker)," the police added.
Police have registered a case of murder. The area has been cordoned off and search for the terrorists is on, they said.
Several BJP workers have been killed in terrorist attacks in the last few months.
The fresh cycle of attacks on the BJP members started when suspected militants shot dead BJP district president, Waseem Bari, his father Bashir Ahmad Sultan and his brother Umar Sultan, outside their residence in north Kashmir’s Bandipora district on July 8.
Since then, two party members, Sajad Ahmad Khanday, a Sarpanch of Vessu village of Kulgam district and Abdul Hameed Najar, district president of Budgam OBC Morcha have been shot dead, while a BJP panch, Arif Ahmad Shah, was critically wounded in a separate attack in south Kashmir.
