Jammu AIIMS get 50 MBBS seats for 2020-21 academics session

Jammu: Finally the wait is over and some good news poured in for the aspirants from Jammu wanted to pursue career in health sector by becoming professional doctors as the Union Health Ministry have sanctioned 50 MBBS seats to All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) coming up in Samba district for the 2020-21 academics session.

Sources in the Health and Education Department here told ‘The News Now’ that upcoming AIIMS Hospital in Vijaypur tehsil of Samba district have been allotted 50 MBBS seats for this academic year 2020-21.

They further added that total 50 seats allotted to AIIMS will have 13 reserved seats for Other Backward Classes (OBCs) including one for OBC Priority Household (PH), five seats have been kept reserved for Economically Weaker (EW).

They added that General category to have 22 seats (including one in Priority Household) while seven seats have been kept reserved in Scheduled Caste category and three in Scheduled Tribes category.

Pertinently, the Government of India under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi is working for upgrading the health infrastructure and improvement of medical education in the country, specifically in the UT of J&K.

The Centre has already sanctioned seven new Medical Colleges in J&K, out of which four are already functional and the Government Medical College Doda has also been issued “Letter of Permission” (LoP) for this session.

Besides this, the process for establishment of remaining two newly sanctioned Medical Colleges at Udhampur and Handwara have already been initiated.

Under construction Jammu AIIMS will be 750 bedded and be divided equally into general units and super specialty units.

Located around 35-Kilometre from Jammu along the national highway, Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid its foundation on February 3 in 2019, which will be completed in 2023.

Official sources said that on the North of the hospital, Emergency Block, Blood Bank and other important units will be set up while on its South, quarters for faculty and other staff besides bio-medical waste plant, water plant and other requirements will be fulfilled.

AIIMS will be constructed on nearly 100 acres (1954 kanals, 6 marlas) while the departments of Forest, Estates, Custodians and local wings have also contributed their land for the project, they added.

“The hospital will also have surgery, medicine, dermatology, pediatrics units in general department,” they said and added that in super-specialty, it will have Cardiology, Neuro Surgery, Neurology, Endocrinology, Nephrology units besides having many Intensive Care Units in each department.

It is reliably learnt that a school upto higher secondary will also be set up for the children of faculty within the premises and the local students in the adjoining areas can also get admissions in the school.

However, recently fresh 100 MBBS seats were also approved for the Government Medical College, Kathua after the nod from the Board of Governors in supersession of Medical Council of India.

After the approval from the MCI, fresh MBBS seats are allotted to the Government Medical Colleges Kathua while GMC Rajouri already have been allotted 115 (15 for economically weaker sections) and seats for other Government Medical Colleges are in the pipeline for starting the academic session with 100 MBBS seats to each new GMC allotted across the Union Territory.

The addition of MBBS seats for the upcoming academic session, would take the total available seats in J&K to 1100 in various Medical Colleges across the Union Territory.

“By next year, AIIMS Awantipora may also be started from a temporary campus in a GMC in Kashmir,” sources added.

In March this year, a Central team from AIIMS also visited Jammu to select a site for makeshift arrangement of AIIMs Jammu as the Government of India had decided to start the first batch of 50 MBBS students from this academic session in a makeshift arrangement.
