Udhampur records major spike as J&K tally nears 21k, death toll rises to 388

12 trainee cops, 63 SFs, Patwari, Judicial officer among those infected

JAMMU: The Coronavirus continued its upward movement in Jammu and Kashmir, with 613 people testing positive for deadly virus on Sunday, taking the overall tally of infections close to 21-thousand mark, settling at 20972, even as 6 more people died due to Covid-19--all of them in Valley, pushing the total number of fatalities due to the deadly virus in union territory to 388.

Jammu region witnessed a major push in fresh cases with 214 fresh cases (145 of them included in the daily media bulletin), courtesy 80 fresh cases in Udhampur only including 75 personnel of security forces, while five employees of a private bank in Samba, a judicial officer in Poonch and a Patwari from Rajouri were also among the fresh infections.

Out of 615 reported cases, 468 were reported in Valley and 145 in Jammu region, while the lockdown remained imposed across the union territory leading to muted celebrations of Eid.

As many as 654 patients were discharged from the hospitals following their treatment—96 in Jammu and 558 in Kashmir. With this the recoveries also saw a massive rise, settling at 12871, while actives now stand at 7713.

The deaths related to covid-19 rose to 388 in Jammu and Kashmir after 8 fresh fatalities on Saturday, all of them in Valley. Out of the total deaths related to COVID-19, 360 have occurred in Kashmir division and 28 from Jammu.

There was no let up in the number of new cases, with Jammu and Kashmir recording 613 cases on Saturday, taking the infections tally to 21972.

As per a media bulletin, of 145 cases in Jammu region, 52 cases were reported from Jammu, 21 from Rajouri, 2 from Ramban, 19 from Doda, 8 from Poonch districts, 5 from Samba, 12 from Udhampur, 8 from Kathua, 10 from Reasi and 8 cases from Kishtwar.

Udhampur recorded its highest daily caseload with 80 persons from the district turning positive out of which 75 were personnel of security forces.

“They included as many as 12 trainee officers of Jammu and Kashmir police at Sher-e-Kashmir Police Academy, 50 from BSF Academy and 13 from CRPF, while rest were civilians, including 2 travellers and 3 contact of earlier positive cases,” Deputy Commissioner Piyush Singhla said.

It may be recalled that at least 3 probationary sub-inspectors had tested positive for Coronavirus in Jammu and Kashmir last month following which the SKPA authorities have said that only those trainee officers with a negative report will be allowed to rejoin the academy for the phase-2 of their training.

However, only 12 cases were reported from Udhampur in the official media bulletin, which was latest by 5 pm.

Rajouri district also reported 21 new cases today which included a Patwari and a police official—both contacts of earlier positive cases, while two were personnel of second Battalion of IRP.

In view of Rakshabandhan, the district administration has decided to open sweets shops and cosmetics shops on Sunday.

“Although weekend lockdown shall continue but Sweet shops and Manyari shops shall remain open tomorrow from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM as a special occasion on account of Rakshabandhan,” Mohammad Nazir Sheikh, Deputy Commissioner Rajouri said, adding that all SOPs of COVID-19 like wearing of Masks and social distancing would be observed.

In Samba district, five more employees of a private bank turned out positive in Vijaypur tehsil, taking the total number of infected employees to 9. Earlier, four employees of the Axis Bank branch there had tested positive.
A judicial officer, on Eid holiday in Mendhar tested positive for Coronavirus in Poonch district.

There was no respite in Jammu district, with 52 people including 24 travelers testing positive for Coronavirus.

As per a media bulletin, among the 468 fresh Valley cases, Srinagar reported 305 cases, Baramulla 23, Pulwama 58, Kulgam 4, Shopian 16, Anantnag 12, Budgam 14, Kupwara 4, Bandipora 22, and Ganderbal 10 cases.

According to the daily Media Bulletin on novel Corona virus (Covid-19), out of 20972 positive cases, 7713 are Active Positive, 12871 have recovered and 388 have died; 28 in Jammu division and 360 in Kashmir division.

The Bulletin further said that out of 647271 test results available, 626299 samples have been tested as negative till August 01, 2020.

Additionally, till date 370172 travelers and persons in contact with suspected cases have been enlisted for observation which included 45128 persons in home quarantine including facilities operated by government, 6 in Hospital Quarantine, 7713 in hospital isolation and 41038 under home surveillance. Besides, 275899 persons have completed their surveillance period.
