Senior KAS officer, SI among 15 more die, toll 383; J&K infections cross 20k

First 10k cases in 129 days, next 10k in 21 days; 282 die in July

JAMMU/SRINAGAR: A serving senior KAS officer and a sub-inspector of J&K Police were among 15 people who died of the Covid-19 on Friday, pushing the toll due to the deadly disease across the union territory to 383, even as with 490 fresh cases emerging in last 24 hours, the Covid-19 infections tally in Jammu and Kashmir crossed 20-thousand-mark on Friday, just three weeks after it has crossed 10-thousand cases.
Jammu and Kashmir had recorded its first Covid-19 case on March 8 and took 72 days to record 1000 cases. However, the sharp spike thereafter, saw the UT racing from first case to ten thousand cases in just 129 days, while the next ten thousand cases have come only in 21 days. The month of July also witnessed 282 new deaths.
A senior police officer in Rajouri, 11 cops from Jammu’s warehouse area, as many as 34 security personnel, two pregnant women and 4 minor were among the fresh cases 143 of which were reported from Jammu region and 347 from Kashmir Valley.
As many as 375 patients were discharged from the hospitals following their treatment—78 in Jammu and 297 in Kashmir, taking the recoveries to 12217, while actives now stand at 7765.
Weekend lockdown kicked in on Friday evening in atleast 4 districts of Jammu region-Jammu, Kathua, Udhampur and Rajouri.
The deaths related to covid-19 rose to 383 in Jammu and Kashmir after 15 fresh fatalities reported in last 24 hours—two in Jammu and 13 in Valley, and included a senior KAS officer.
57-year-old Tasaduq Jeelani became the first serving bureaucrat to die of Covid-19.
“He was admitted in the SKIMS Bemina on 14 July and had even reported negative a few days later, but couldn’t survive the post-Covid complications,” a senior doctor at the hospital said, adding he died due to cardiopulmonary arrest.
Lieutenant Governor G C Murmu led the condolences pouring from all across the UT over the death of Jeelani, who was working as special secretary, Social Welfare Department, and had served as Director Information in the past.
Murmu said Jeelani was a dedicated officer who worked with zeal and enthusiasm. "It's unfortunate that we lost him so early," he said, and prayed for eternal peace to the departed soul and forbearance to the bereaved family at this hour of grief.
Jammu region witnessed fresh casualties for fifth consecutive day, with two patients—both from winter capital breathing their last today.
They included a 56-year-old woman from Shastri Nagar. She was suffering from Type 2 diabetes mellitus with Corona symptoms like high fever and cough and high respiratory distress when she was brought to the GMC Jammu on Wednesday where she died and reported positive for Covid-19 late Thursday night.
The other casualty was also a 32-year-old woman from Gorkha Nagar, who had died at home on Thursday and sampled positive for Coronavirus on Friday, an official informed.
The family members and other contacts of both the deceased will be sampled for Corona testing on Saturday.
Besides Jeelani, 12 more deaths were reported from Valley in last 24 hours and included a 52-year-old Police Sub-Inspector from Khanda Budgam, a 70-year-old male from Dragmulla Kupwara, a 54-year-old woman from Pampore Pulwama, a 62-year-old man from Qamarwari Srinagar, a 75-year-old man from Panzinara Srinagar, a 57-year-old woman from Rainawari Srinagar, a 75-year-old man from Arigam Tral, a 55-year-old woman from Fatah Kadal, a 75-year-old woman from Zakoora Srinagar, an old-aged man from Peerbagh Srinagar, a 70-year-old woman from Sonwar Srinagar, and a 70-year-old woman from Gulistan Bala Baramulla.
An official from CD hospital said that a 52-year-old Police Sub-Inspector from Khandah Budgam, posted in Police Station Awantipora who was admitted on 30 July died on Friday at 3:55 am.
“He was having complaints of breathlessness, fever and respiratory distress and was referred from DH Pulwama on Thursday,” he said.
An official from SKIMS Soura said that a 62-year-old man from Qamarwari Srinagar who was admitted on 19 July died on Friday. He added that a 75-year-old man from Panzinara Srinagar who was admitted on 18 July also died today. He further added that a 57-year-old man from Rainawari, Srinagar who was admitted on 26 July also died on Friday.
"A 75-year-old woman from Zakoora area of Srinagar who was admitted on 30 July and was tested positive after her death," he said.
An official from SMHS said that a 70-year-old man from Dragmulla Kupwara who was admitted with bilateral Pneumonia and was tested positive after death.
He said that a 55-year-old woman from Fatah Kadal Srinagar who was admitted few days before with multiple ailments, died on Friday.
He further added that an old-aged man from Peerbagh Srinagar who was admitted on 28 July with bilateral Pneumonia was tested positive after his death.
"A 70-year-old lady from Sonwar Srinagar who was admitted on 29 July with bilateral pneumonia was also declared positive after death," he said, adding that a 70-year-old woman from Gulistan Bala Baramulla who was admitted with bilateral Pneumonia on 27 July died on Friday and was tested positive after her death.
An official from JVC Bemina said that a 54-year-old woman from Pampore Pulwama who was admitted on 28 July died at mid-night.
He further added that a 75-year-old man from from Arigam Tral who was admitted on 22 July died on Friday.
With these deaths, the toll in Jammu and Kashmir due to COVID-19 has reached to 383 including 355 from Kashmir division and 28 from Jammu division.
There was no let up in the number of new cases, with Jammu and Kashmir recording 490 cases on Friday, taking the infections tally to 20359. 347 of them were recorded in Valley while Jammu region also recorded 143 cases.
Of 143 cases in Jammu region, 43 were reported from Jammu, 11 from Kathua, 24 from Rajouri, 24 from Udhampur, 01 from Ramban, 18 from Samba, 01 from Poonch, 01 from Kishtwar and 20 from Reasi.
They included a senior police officer in Rajouri, 11 cops from Nehru Market police post, where 5 cops have already tested positive among others.
As per a media bulletin, among the 347 fresh Valley cases, 128 were reported from Srinagar, 24 from Baramulla, 11 from Kulgam, 08 from Shopian, 21 from Anantnag, 09 from Kupwara, 85 from Pulwama, 29 from Budgam, 22 from Bandipora and 10 from Ganderbal.
According to the daily Media Bulletin on novel Corona virus (Covid-19), out of 20359 positive cases, 7765 are Active Positive, 12217 have recovered and 377 have died; 28 in Jammu division and 349 in Kashmir division.
The Bulletin further said that out of 637515 test results available, 617156 samples have been tested as negative till July 31, 2020.
Additionally, till date 368806 travelers and persons in contact with suspected cases have been enlisted for observation which included 46478 persons in home quarantine including facilities operated by government, 6 in Hospital Quarantine, 7765 in hospital isolation and 40732 under home surveillance. Besides, 273448 persons have completed their surveillance period.
