Book Review: "When the Soul Heals: Explorations in Spiritual Psychology" by Pulkit Sharma

A lot of self-help books delve only into the modern, western perspective of psychotherapy and spirituality to guide readers. However, a very few of them include elements of ancient and traditional schools of psychology. The author Pulkit Sharma, who is a clinical psychologist and a spiritual counsellor, and has worked as a mental health consultant and research head with several organizations, has come out with the book "When the Soul Heals", which amalgamates traditional and modern schools of study to present a comprehensive guide for readers.

A variety of topics like stress, anger, grief, depression, anxiety, beauty obsessions, addictions and caregiver burden have been covered in the different sections of the book. The sub-headings in which the topics have been described include common causes, symptoms, treatment and the cognitive and psychoanalytic aspects. Many interesting and informative case studies have also been used in the narrative.

The emphasis has been placed on easy-to-use practical techniques, contemplations and guided meditations in the book, with theoretical concepts only included to elucidate the concept further. Otherwise, theory has been relegated to the backseat in this book.

The book explains many arcane concepts as well as straightforward explanations in a lucid format. Mystical perspectives from Hinduism, Christianity, Buddhism, Jainism, Sikhism, Taoism, Judaism, Zoroastrianism, Islam, Bahá’í Faith, the teachings of Sri Aurobindo and The Mother, and the revelations of other great spiritual masters form the core of the healing approach described in this book. The author's explanation for including such an eclectic mix of theologies is that, “the ubiquitous essence found in different religions and spiritual systems will be useful for people of all faiths.”

The recommendations provided are thoughtful, and based on extensive research and empirical insights.

The blurb reads, “The book helps readers understand and heal common psychological problems by tapping their own spiritual force.” Transcending the realms between modern psychology practices and ancient spiritual wisdom, the book incorporates insights from 10 major religions of the world.

Many techniques described in this book are contemplative, with the readers advised to look into their inner meditative potential for inner and outer bliss. Other methods detail taking control of external factors. The solutions are realistic and workable.

The valuable guidance presented in this well-written book is a delight to read, and should be read by those wanting to explore pragmatic, step-by-step and easy-to-follow techniques for self-growth and self-development. Readers should dive into this transformative self-help book to get information about a diverse array of material on spirituality, and nurture their mind, body and soul in the process.
