Lockdown imposed in Rajouri after highest 51 cases J&K infections near 10K, 5 deaths take toll to 160

50 SFs, 4 hospital employees among 387 fresh cases

JAMMU/SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir recorded its sharpest spike in the Covid-19 infections in past 5 weeks, with 387 more persons testing positive for Coronavirus on Friday, pushing its tally close to 10000-mark at 9888.
Last time, the daily caseload was more than today’s figure was on June 7, when 620 infections were reported. The fresh cases included over 50 personnel of security forces, two doctors and two infants, three of a family from Jammu city, and two hospital employees in Jammu.
Five more patients died in Valley, taking the toll to 160, even as Rajouri district recorded its highest single-day spike of 51 new cases, prompting authorities to reimpose a lockdown, even as OPD services were suspended at GMC Rajouri after report of lady who was admitted there returned positive. In Jammu district, more areas including Ustad Mohalla and Gole Puli were sealed.
Kashmir Valley on Friday reported five deaths due to covid-19, taking the fatality count due to the virus in J&K to 160.
Officials informed that an 80-year-old man from Kokernag area of the South Kashmir's Anantnag district died last night, an 82-year-old man from Habba Kadal area of Srinagar and 36-year-old lady from Noorbagh area of Srinagar died on Friday morning at CD hospital while as 75 year old man from Kupwara died at JVC and 95-year-old man from Shopian died at SKIMS (JVC) Bemina.
Medical Superintendent of CD hospital, Dr. Salim Tak told that the patient from Kokernag area of Anantnag was admitted on July 4 after testing positive and patient died last night.
He said that patient was suffering from bilateral pneumonia besides respiratory failure.
He added that patient from Habba Kadal was admitted on July 7 and died on Friday morning.
“He was diabetic, hypertensive and had Community Acquired Pneumonia,” he added.
He further added that a 36-year-old lady from Noorbagh area of Srinagar was referred from SMHS on July 08 after she was tested positive and died at CD hospital on Friday morning. He said the patient was suffering from bilateral pneumonia and other ailments.
Principal JVC Bemina, Dr. Reyaz Untoo told that the elderly man from Dadsun Kupwara who was tested positive died at JVC on Friday afternoon. "Patient was suffering from pneumonia, hypertension and diabetes," he said. Medical superintendent JVC Bemina Dr Shifa Deva said that the patient was admitted on July 04 and he died in ICU.
The fifth causality took place in SKIMS (JVC) Bemina where a 95-year-old male patient died of Covid-19. “He was suffering from pneumonia and other ailments. He was admitted in the hospital on July 8,” said Dr Shifa Deva, Medical Superintendent at SKIMS Bemina.
With five more deaths, the death toll due to COVID-19 in J&K has reached 160 including 145 from Kashmir and 15 from Jammu division.
Srinagar district with 39 deaths has the highest fatalities followed by Baramulla (31), Kulgam (18), Shopian (16), Anantnag (13), Budgam (11), Jammu (9), Kupwara (8), Pulwama (5), Bandipora (3), Doda (2) while one death each has been reported from Ganderbal, Poonch, Udhampur, Rajouri and Kathua.
J&K also reported 387 new infections on Friday, including 50 personnel of CRPF, SSB, BSF, Army, and Jammu and Kashmir Police, taking the total number of the cases in J&K to 9888.
Among the fresh cases, 97 were recorded in Jammu region and 290 in Valley while 91 people—35 in Jammu and 56 in Valley— were discharged from hospitals today, taking recoveries to 5786. Out of the total infections in J&K, 3943 are active positive.
Of 97 cases in Jammu region, 51 cases were reported from Rajouri, 23 from Jammu, 7 from Kathua, 11 from Ramban, 01 from Samba, 02 from Poonch, and one each from Doda and Reasi.
Rajouri recorded its highest single-day jump on Friday, prompting the district administration to re-impose lockdown in the district from Saturday. 36 of the total 51 cases have no travel history.
Of these 36, 16 are from a Draj village where 20 people have already been tested positive.
“11 others are from Rajouri town and nine of them were contacts of an earlier positive case and two were sampled in random sampling mechanism,” officials said, adding two among them are from Panja Jawahar Nagar area, one from Chapriyan, one from Kheora, three from Nabban Mohalla of town and three from Nagesh bridge locality near Oshodhara Aashram of town.
Besides, one woman is from Kalakote, a man from Palma and a teenage boy is from Muradpur.
Deputy Commissioner (DC) Rajouri, Nazir Ahmed Sheikh said that entire Rajouri town shall remain under lockdown from Saturday morning onwards and strict restrictions would remain in place.
Among Jammu cases, three were members of a family from Ustad Mohalla, two employees of Marh hospital, besides a two-year-old baby.
The authorities sealed Ustad Mohalla, a paying guest in Pacca Danga, Gole Puli in Talab Tillo from where a death was reported yesterday, declaring them as red zones.
As many as 35 patients including 8 from Jammu, 5 each from Samba, Udhampur and Kathua, 4 each from Doda and Reasi, and two each from Rajouri and Poonch were discharged from hospitals after their recovery.
As per a media bulletin, among the 290 fresh Valley cases, 94 were reported from Srinagar, 33 from Kulgam, 36 from Baramulla, 14 from Shopian, 11 from Anantnag, 34 from Kupwara, 47 from Pulwama, 06 from Budgam, 08 from Bandipora and 07 from Ganderbal.
Dr. G H Yatoo, Nodal Officer Coronavirus Control Measures at SKIMS Soura told that out of 2659 samples which were processed at the viral diagnostic laboratory of the hospital today, 132 returned positive for the virus.
They included 37 from Army, CRPF and SSB, 33 from Pulwama, 24 from Srinagar, 12 from Anantnag, 10 from Kulgam, seven from Budgam, six from Bandipora, two from Kupwara and one from Baramulla.
Dr Riyaz Untoo, Principal SKIMS Bemina told that out of 394 samples processed at the hospital’s lab, 62 tested positive for COVID-19, 46 from Srinagar and 16 from Shopian.

Meanwhile, 56 more COVID-19 patients have recovered and discharged from various hospitals in Kashmir.
According to the daily Media Bulletin on novel Corona virus (Covid-19), out of 9888 positive cases, 3943 are Active Positive, 5786 have recovered and 159 have died; 15 in Jammu division and 144 in Kashmir division.
The Bulletin further said that out of 437928 test results available, 428040 samples have been tested as negative till July 10, 2020.
Additionally, till date 308573 travelers and persons in contact with suspected cases have been enlisted for surveillance which included 38509 persons in home quarantine including facilities operated by government, 44 in Hospital Quarantine, 3,943 in hospital isolation and 44932 under home surveillance. Besides, 220986 persons have completed their surveillance period.
