Author Interview: Himanshu Rai

Himanshu Rai is a telecom professional with a passion for storytelling. He lives in Noida with his wife and son. He loves writing and tries to bring real locations and themes into his stories, enabling the readers to visualize what he writes. He has recently come out with the book “Rhythm Roger – The Secrets of Electon”, which is probably the world’s first Telecom Fantasy book. The book is getting rave reviews from readers, and has been released on Amazon Kindle and the paperback is to be released in June, which got delayed to the lockdown. In a candid chat with Chirdeep Malhotra, he talks about his latest book, his writing journey, and how he created the virtual telecom world of Electon.

Please tell us more about Himanshu Rai as a person.

I am a simple person who only believes in hard work. My parents taught me that if you want to earn something in life, earn respect. That is what will be left after you will leave this earth.

Science fiction. How did that happen for you?

I am an engineer, working in a Telecom giant from the last 2 decades and so Science fiction was always in my mind. From the very early days of my technical career, technical terms of telecom looked to me as characters who are struggling among themselves for their existence. This book is a combination of those imaginations. Even when I was in engineering college, I learnt technical concepts by imagining them as real-life characters, which made me learn them fast.

If you had to describe the book “Rhythm Roger: Secrets of Electon” in one sentence, what would it be?

A world of Imagination.

Now tell us a little bit more about the book!

When mobile technology started, it started with voice calls, and with time we humans got dependent on mobile phones. Each day with the evolution of technology, we are getting more and more dependent. Children are now more over gadgets then outdoor games; we are more connected with friends and family over social networks then emotionally and physically. This book is about that. This book is a war between Voice time slots and data timeslots. Voice time slots want to save humans from Dslots, and so they keep on changing human history.
To explain, when you make a mobile call, your voice or data travels via time slots; this is mobile technology. But there are different types of timeslots and different other terms on which it depends. This story is about Vslots and Dslots. To understand this story, you need to imagine every technical thing around you as a human being. For example, there is a character in a book with the name “Markboo”, he is Facebook.

How did the idea of writing this book emerge?

The name of my son is Rhythm, and this is a story that I was narrating to him for long during nights. He loved to hear himself as a superhero and never slept without listening to this story. I decided to convert it into a novel after seeing his interest in the story.

We are curious about the title “Rhythm Roger: Secrets of Electon”? When and how did you decide that would be the title of your book?

As I said, Rhythm is the name of my son, and this is a story I narrated him with the same name during bedtime. That is why I named this as the book’s title.

Tell us more about Rhythm. How did the character come to you, and how much did he change in the process of writing the novel?

When I narrated this story to my son, it was more childish and magical, but when I started writing it, I researched more and brought all technical concepts in place to build this story. The book is written in such a way that even a kid can understand the technical concepts easily.

What kind of research did you do for the book?

A lot, I will say. As I am from a telecom background, technical terms related to it were easy for me, but yes, still much history needs to be researched. For example, I researched a lot about Samuel Morse, Charles Wheatstone, etc.

What challenges did you face while writing this book?

Characterization was the toughest part of the book. As each character in the book exists in the real world as a technical term, I needed to design their characters matching to it. Like Markboo, as he is actually Facebook, so its nature needs to be smart, joyful, and someone who is loved by girls a lot.

Can you recommend five books from any genre, for our readers to add to their reading lists, that you particularly cherish?

I would like readers to read all books of mine which are of a different genre: “Recollecting the End” – Thriller, “Chariots of Mahabharata” – Mythology, “My Mute Girlfriend” – Romance, “I Am Always Here With You” – Romance, and “Rhythm Roger” – Young Adult. Isn't it good enough?

There are many new writers and poets who are aspiring to get their work published. What would you say to them?

I'll say, write from your heart. If your story is excellent and unique, no one can stop it from getting published.

What are you working on next?

Presently, I am working on a book called ‘Piddu,’ which is one of the unique stories everyone would love to read and then will start working on the second part of Rhythm Roger. My mailbox is flooded with requests for the second part of Rhythm Roger since its release.

Can you share with our readers a motivational quote that keeps you going?

Whatever will happen, will happen for good.
