Two girls die after drowning in pond

SRINAGAR: Two of the five minor girls who drowned in a pond in Srinagar and were subsequently rescued, died at a hospital after developing breathing issues on Monday.
The deceased were among five minor girls who had drowned in stagnant rainwater near stone quarries in Zewan area of Srinagar Monday afternoon.
Police said that these girls were playing near a pond adjacent to stone quarry at Zewan area of Srinagar. “All of a sudden, they slipped into the pond where over the years, rain water has accumulated. Soon, a rescue operation by the locals and police was started after which three were immediately pulled out of the water and two others were rescued later,” police sources said.
Two of the girls had developed breathing issue and were shifted to Sub District Hospital Pampore for treatment, where they were declared dead by the doctors.
The deceased girls were identified as Rutba and Rounak, aged 16 and 14 years, respectively.
A police officer also confirmed that two of the five girls breathed their last at the hospital.
A pall of gloom descended on the families of two deceased girls at Zewan as it was only second day of the Eid-ul-Fitr festival.
