JAMMU: A man was booked for an alleged "sensitive" social media post having the potential of disturbing peace in Poonch district, even as mobile Internet services remained snapped for hours in Kashmir to prevent rumours about the health of separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani.
Police booked a Surankote resident for alleged "sensitive" post on Facebook.
During a routine surveillance of social media platforms, a Surankote police team came across Facebook accounts on which sensitive updates were being posted constantly, police officials said.
“The post by Shoket Ali was found to be sensitive in nature with the potential to disturb peace and creating law and order problem in Poonch district,” they said.
“The post could have emerged as a grave threat to peace and order. A first investigation report has been registered against him,” they added.
Poonch Senior Superintendent of Police Ramesh Kumar Angral appealed to the people to use social media carefully and in a positive manner.
"Police once again warns all mischievous people that whosoever will attempt to instigate the public by spreading rumours and fake posts having the potential to disturb peace will be dealt with strictly under the law, and stern action will be initiated against them," he said.
Police have also appealed to the people of Poonch district to make proper use of social media and not to indulge in illegal activities.
Meanwhile, mobile Internet services was restored in Kashmir on Thursday afternoon, hours after authorities had suspended the facility to prevent rumours about the health of separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani.
The services were snapped late Wednesday night after some social media posts claimed the health of the 90-year-old Geelani deteriorated, they said.
Adequate number of security forces have been deployed at vulnerable places in Kashmir to maintain law and order and prevent miscreants from fomenting any trouble.
Geelani's family said he has been ill for some time but his condition is stable.
