Book Review: "Gunpoint Groom" by Kamini Kusum

Groom abduction is a practice which still goes on unabated in many regions of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, though the phenomenon has become less prevalent. Known as Jabaria shaadi or Pakaruah shaadi in local parlance, it is resorted to by the bride’s family to avoid heavy dowry costs in most instances. Though the topic of groom kidnapping has been featured in Bollywood films like Jabariya Jodi and Antardwand, and television serials like Bhagyavidhaata, not much books have been written on this theme. The author Kamini Kusum comes up with the book “Gunpoint Groom”, in which she delves into this topic with emotional warmth and authentic portrayals.

The narrative follows the protagonists Karan, Jia and Kavya. Karan is in love with Jia, but in a twist of fate, he is kidnapped and forced to marry Kavya at gunpoint. Kavya is also forced for this marriage and it is no less an ordeal for her than for Karan. How Karan and Kavya deal with the forced marriage? Will they fall in love? Or will Karan and Jia come back together? The storyline then goes on to answer these questions.

The author writes with fierce warmth about characters dealing with the after-effects of a forced marriage and coping with their emotional intricacies. Apart from depicting the topic of groom abduction, the well-plotted narrative has a lot going on. There are powerful depictions of the impact of inter-state migration, meddling of politics, the still prevalent practice of dowry, gender discrimination, and the cultural clash of ideas and traditions in modern India. There are also loving portrayals of love and romance.

The characterisation is good, and the story is fast-paced with many twists and turns. The book, in some portions, is like a television serial with a heavy dose of drama which will not be liked by some readers. But readers who like dramatic sagas will devour this book with aplomb. Also, tight editing could have made the book a breezier read.

Though the premise of the book is fictional, the author presents an authentic and realistic look of the practice of groom kidnapping, which is conveyed with emotional verve and a heartfelt understanding of the nuances of the challenging topic. This is an engaging page-turner which is peopled with lovable characters, and will be liked by readers who like riveting fast-paced reads with high-octane drama and loads of entertainment.
