JAMMU: In a shocking revelation, a BSF soldier was behind the parcel Improvised Explosive Device (IED) explosives sent to BSF’s 173 battalion, reportedly in a bid to kill his Second In Command (2IC) Gurvinder Singh.
The alert personnel of the Border Security Force (BSF) had foiled an attempt to carry out an IED blast on the force’s 173rd battalion in Samba district on January 5, when an individual had left a parcel near the RP gate in the name of second-in-command Gurvinder Singh.
On being suspicious, the force had called in the bomb disposal squad only to find out that the parcel contained an IED, including a detonator, a 2.5 Volt battery, and substantial amount of explosives.
However, days later, as the police cracked the case, it was revealed that the attempted attack was not a militant’s bid but a handiwork of another BSF personnel posted in the same battalion.
Sources identified the accused person as constable Samarpal (041042018) of Hubli, West Bengal.
The constable who happens to be the pioneer-- expert in making and diffuse explosives, had sent parcel IED for his senior in order to kill him, official sources informed The News Now.
“The investigation pointed towards the involvement of Samarpal and a team was dispatched to Kolkata to secure his arrest on January 10. The police team in collaboration with Kolkata police conducted a raid at the residence of BSF constable Samarpal and arrested him,” said a senior police officer.
He said that the BSF constable Samarpal who is expert in making improvised devices, left an IED parcel at the entrance gate of the battalion for the Assistant Commandant.
“After leaving parcel, he went underground,” he said and added that the act is being probed, with preliminary interrogation pointing towards the vengeance.
“There could be any reason. It could be a feeling of harassment or even he not being allowed leave. The interrogation is going on,” the officer said.
Officials said that Samarpal has been booked by Samba police in a case vide FIR No 03/2020 u/s 3/7 IPC and 4/5 Explosive Substance Act.
He was produced before the District Court Samba for remand, following which he has been sent to the Joint Interrogation Centre (JIC), R S Pura later for further questioning.
