JAMMU: During the initial period of October, the first two to three days have seen good rains over Northwest Plains, particularly Punjab, Haryana, Delhi and the NCR region. Since then, i.e. post October 4, weather of Northwest Plains has been dry. The hills of North India have also not seen any significant activity for the past few days.

However, it is all set to change as the first active Western Disturbance is likely to approach the Western Himalayas by tomorrow. With this, scattered rains and thundershowers will occur over Jammu and Kashmir. Higher reaches may witness light snowfall also.

Scattered rains may be seen over Himachal Pradesh as well as Uttarakhand. Punjab is also expected to see scattered rainfall on October 18. Isolated light rains may occur over northern districts of Haryana including Ambala, and adjoining areas. Intensity of rains will be more over Amritsar, Jalandhar, Gurdaspur, Patiala, and Ludhiana. Other parts of the states may see isolated rains. Now, frequency and intensity of Western Disturbance will start increasing. In fact, these systems will now start to travel in lower latitudes and affect Western Himalayas and Northern Plains.

Western Disturbances are the ones responsible for winter rains in North India and snowfall in the Western Himalayan region. Until and unless there is a strong Western Disturbance to affect the Western Himalayas, and winds become northerly, winters will not truly set in.
