Thimpu: Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched RuPay card in Bhutan making the Himalayan kingdom the second country to roll out the special services after Singapore.

'I am happy that I haved launched RuPay card. This will help in digital payments, and help in increasing business and tourism between the two nations,' the Prime Minister said after the launch in presence of his Bhutanese counterpart Dr Lotay Tshering.

The 'RuPay card' trials in Bhutan had begun in March this year.

In May last year during the Prime Minister's visit to Singapore, the launch of mutually acceptable digital wallets between Indian and Singaporean citizens was one of the high-profile events.

In Singapore, the transactions are hosted by Indian government’s National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) — an umbrella organisation for all retail payment systems in India — Singapore’s Network for Electronic Transfers.

The NPCI is working with some other countries also on use of Ru-Pay cards.
