Seeking revival, Cong meet under Azad held

JAMMU: Aiming to rejuvenate the party in Jammu and Kashmir, a crucial meeting of the Congress party was held today under the chairmanship of Senior Congress leader and leader of opposition in Rajya Sabha, Ghulam Nabi Azad to formulate future strategy and strengthen its leadership in the state.



After the recent Lok Sabha polls debacle, the Congress party has been losing its ground in state as many important leaders have quit the party blaming poor leadership. While the party is fighting for its revival across the country, the Jammu and Kashmir holds significance as it was known as bastion of party, where it has been a part of Government from 2002 to 2014.



Two important leaders of the party including a leader from Darhal Rajouri Mohammad Iqbal Malik and a former MLA from Akhnoor, Sham Lal had quit the party recently. A major setback for the party was that the both leader joined Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP).



“After assessing the poll debacle and the development in the state, the central leadership has started exercise to revive the major in Jammu and Kashmir. This is the second crucial meeting under the chairmanship of Ghulam Nabi Azad in past few months,” a party insider said.



“In the three-hour long meeting several important issues were discussed. Suggestions were tabled before Azad to strengthen party in the state,” he added.



The meeting was attended by Peerzada Muhammad Sayed, Haji Abdul Rashid Dar, Muhammad Amin Bhat, Gulzar Ahmad Wani, Shoaib Lone, Hilal Ahmad Shah and Haji Farooq Mir. Senior party workers and office bearers from different constituencies were also present.
